Australia qualified for the Asian Cup round of 16 stages by beating Syria 3-2 in Group B. Awer Mabil's curling effort gave the Australians the advantage on 41 minutes but Omar Khirbin equalised two minutes later. Christopher Ikonomidis restored the lead for Australia in the 54th minute and Syria were lucky to equalise through an 80th minute penalty. Tom Rogic cleared all doubt in added time the winning goal as Australia finish second in the group with six points. Syria, on the other hand, bow out of the competition, finishing bottom of the group with just one point from three games.
