We haven't credited Yuvraj enough for 2011 WC: Gambhir

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir made a fairly frank statement on his country's World Cup-winning achievement in 2011.

Gambhir claimed that former great all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was not given enough credit for helping the Men in Blue reach the World Cup final, with the media focusing on MS Dhoni's title-winning six.

It is no secret that Gambhir and Dhoni made vital contributions with the bat in the championship match against Sri Lanka in April 2011, bringing the crown home after 28 years.

However, Gambhir looked on India's campaign and noted that Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina, and Munaf Patel, among others, were instrumental in the team's victory.

"We haven't credited Yuvraj enough for the 2011 World Cup. Even Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina, and Munaf Patel. Sachin Tendulkar was the highest run scorer, but do we talk about that? Media keep talking about that one MS Dhoni six. You're obsessed with individuals; you've forgotten team,"

Gambhir told on RevSportz.

Yuvraj Singh was named Player of the Tournament after taking 15 wickets and scoring 362 runs in nine games. Furthermore, speedster Zaheer Khan was the competition's joint-highest wicket-taker, with 21 wickets in nine matches.

Meanwhile, Tendulkar emerged as the Men in Blue's highest run-getter, with 482 runs in nine matches, the second-most in the competition.

In the World Cup final, Gambhir helped orchestrate Team India's victory by slamming 97 off 122 balls, including nine boundaries.

The southpaw was also helped by skipper MS Dhoni's unbeaten 91 off 79 balls, which helped India achieve triumph for the first time since the 1983 World Cup-winning campaign.

Gambhir remarked that he did not concentrate about the statistics and instead focused on how his knock will assist his team and the country.

"When I played that inning, my thinking was not about getting celebrated. My thinking was if I can make 100 crore people happy, if I can make my country proud, that is all I have picked up my bat for,"

he added.
