Football News: Thiago Silva 'open to cancelling Chelsea contract'

Thiago Silva is rumoured to be considering terminating his Chelsea contract at the conclusion of the season.

Despite his advanced age, Silva has proven to be one of the Blues' most important purchases in recent years, providing much-needed experience to the backline.

The veteran has made 114 appearances in all competitions, helping Chelsea win the 2021 Champions League, and his contract was just extended through 2024.

However, that choice was made when Chelsea was led by Graham Potter, and the team was competing in the Champions League and vying for a top-seven spot in the Premier League table.

None of those apply anymore, and Silva recently admitted that he was angered by mistakes made by the club's owners during their year in charge.

Globo Esporte reports that the 38-year-old has been lured to return to his birthplace for 2023-24.

According to the rumour, Marcelo, once of Real Madrid, joining Fluminense has prompted Silva to follow suit and return to his former team.

Silva began his career at Fluminense, where he made 80 appearances before being transferred to AC Milan in 2009.

Silva's purported choice comes at a time when Chelsea is in transition as they prepare for the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach.

Pochettino will have to oversee considerable alterations to his first-team squad, significantly decreasing playing numbers to account for fewer fixtures and the club's financial situation.

The Argentine is said to have informed Todd Boehly and company that he wants to integrate Levi Colwill, a Chelsea academy graduate presently on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, in his future plans.

With Chelsea seeking to find a long-term home for the England Under-21 international and other defenders, the club's leadership may be willing to consider Silva's future in order to lower their pay expenditure.

Whether Silva leaves West London in the summer or at the conclusion of his contract in 2024, Chelsea will not demand a fee for the Brazilian international.
