Apparently mulling a last-minute effort to recruit Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo is Scottish powerhouse Rangers. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is still reportedly pushing for an escape from the Old Trafford,so the 37-year-old's future with Man United is still up in the air as the summer transfer season enters its last week.
Ronaldo is eager to leave United and join a team competing in Europe's most prestigious club competition, after failing to help Manchester United qualify for the Champions League the previous season.
Rangers defeated PSV Eindhoven 3-2 on the road on Wednesday night to advance to the Champions League group stage for the first time in 12 years. The Gers will receive a £40 million windfall for making it to the group stage, and they may use that money to go back to the market to add players to their roster.
Journalist Peter Harding claims that Rangers have inquired about loaning out Ronaldo, now that they have qualified for the Champions League for the 2022-2023 season.
Ronaldo might be seen by Rangers as a direct replacement for striker Alfredo Morelos, who has less than a year left on his contract and faces an uncertain future at Ibrox.
It is believed that a number of elite European teams, including Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Sporting Lisbon, declined the opportunity to sign the Portugal international.
Additionally, journalist Fabrizio Romano recently downplayed reports that Ronaldo, who only has a year left on his contract at Old Trafford, may be of interest to Ligue 1 club Marseille.
Ronaldo, who has 24 goals in 39 appearances for United last year, was only used as a substitute in Monday's 2-1 Premier League victory against Liverpool, but head coach Erik ten Hag is adamant that the forward can contribute significantly to the squad's first team this year.
"I think he can (adapt), and in his whole career and under several managers, he did. Several styles and systems. He always performed. Why can't he do this?"
the Dutchman told reporters after the match.
"His age is not an issue. If you are young, you are good enough, and when you are old, you still deliver the performance, you are also good enough."
Ronaldo's potential inclusion in the starting lineup for United's upcoming Premier League match on the road at Southampton on Saturday afternoon is yet unknown.
