Football News: Red Devils forward set to become Man United’s highest earner

With a lucrative new contract, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is set to become the club's biggest earner.

Rashford's future was thrown into question after a four-goal Premier League season a year ago, but he has revived his career under Erik ten Hag.

During the 2022-23 season, the England international scored 30 goals in all competitions, including 17 in the Premier League, to finish comfortably atop the Red Devils scoring charts.

Rashford's performances helped Manchester United break a six-year trophy drought in the EFL Cup, as well as qualify for the 2023-24 Champions League.

Man United triggered an extension in Rashford's contract in December to prevent him from leaving for free this summer, and those terms will last until the summer of 2024.

Given his remarkable recovery, Manchester United is negotiating a long-term extension with a substantial wage increase, and both parties are hopeful that an agreement can be reached.

Rashford has denied reports that he was wanting £500,000 per week to join on, but according to The Sun, he will still earn a club-record income under his new conditions.

The 25-year-old reportedly makes a weekly compensation of £200,000 under his current contract, but his renewal will increase his weekly salary to £375,000, exceeding David de Gea's £350,000 pay package.

Rashford is expected to stay at Old Trafford after regaining his goal-scoring touch, and Ten Hag has always been sure that he will.

The Englishman has been at Man United for 18 years, having joined their academy in 2005, and he now has 123 goals and 68 assists from 359 games across all competitions.

While Rashford's income is certain to climb significantly, current top earner De Gea's compensation will fall if he signs a new contract.

The Spaniard has only two weeks left on his £350,000-a-week contract, and Man United have no plans to extend it for another year and keep him on the same salary.

Instead, the Red Devils are insisting that the Spaniard agree to a pay cut of up to £175,000 per week, and the two parties have yet to reach an agreement.

Furthermore, with Ten Hag reluctant to guarantee that De Gea will be his starting custodian next season, the former Atletico Madrid man may opt to go on a free transfer.

De Gea won the Premier League's Golden Glove with 17 clean sheets in 2022-23, but he was also chastised for several high-profile gaffes, including four in all competitions last season.
