Football News: Mason Mount wants to extend his contract with Chelsea

Despite reports of a likely departure this summer, Mason Mount is said to be hopeful of extending his stay at Chelsea. The 24-year- old's contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the conclusion of next season.

However, Chelsea have supposedly told him that he is free to leave this summer. Thus, this has prompted a slew of big European clubs to enter the fight for his signing.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United are all rumoured to be interested. Meanwhile, league leaders Arsenal are also said to be keeping a close eye on his position.

A move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, now coached by former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, is also on the cards. Liverpool are believed to be dominating the hunt for Mount's signing, with Jurgen Klopp's side poised to strengthen midfield.

According to The Athletic, the Reds are interested in Mount and have given 'due attention' to prepare an attractive offer. However, according to the sources, Mount's objective has always been to stay at Chelsea.

Earlier this month, head coach Graham Potter claimed that he has spoken to Mount about his contract status on "many" occasions and that "complex" negotiations over his future are taking place at the club.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Chelsea's 3-1 win at Leicester City just under three weeks ago, Potter said:

"Ultimately [the contract] is between the club and Mason.";

"I have spoken to him numerous times about his situation, football and life generally. My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly but sometimes these things happen."

"They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties."

"I am not naive. I know it is an important time for him and an important contract. These things have to be right for him and his family. It's important he makes a decision on that basis."

Mount broke into Chelsea's main squad in 2019 under former manager Frank Lampard after successful loan spells with Vitesse and Derby County, and has since evolved into a crucial player at Stamford Bridge.

Mount has 33 goals and 37 assists in 192 games with the Blues in all competitions, and has three championships to his name, including the 2020-21 Champions League.

The 36-cap England international has had a difficult 2022-23 season, scoring three goals and giving two assists in 23 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, who are currently 10th in the table.

Cahill is not the only Chelsea midfielder connected with a summer exit; Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and N'Golo Kante are also thought to be on the verge of leaving, with the latter out of contract in June.
