Football News: Man United & Chelsea in race to sign the goalkeeper with most saves in PL

According to reports, Chelsea and Manchester United have entered the competition to capture Brentford goalkeeper David Raya. The 27-year-old had a strong 2022-23 season playing goal for the Bees, making more saves (81) than any other Premier League goalie.

Since joining Brentford from Blackburn Rovers in 2019, Raya has made 131 appearances for the club in all competitions. He has been able to Thomas Frank's indisputable top player. Raya was selected for Spain's 2022 World Cup team.

However, given that his contract is set to expire in 18 months, Raya's long-term future in West London has come into question. The 36-year-old shot-stopper Hugo Lloris' contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified the Spaniard as a potential replacement.

The Telegraph claims that Man United and Chelsea are prepared to compete with Spurs for Raya this summer, though. According to the source, Brentford may be open to receiving bids for the goalkeeper.

The Spanish is appreciated by representatives from Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge, between £15 million and £20 million.

If current No. 1 David de Gea decides to leave the club when his contract expires in June, Erik ten Hag may be compelled to enter the transfer market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

De Gea is rumoured to be eager to stay at Man United, but he may have to accept a hefty pay cut from his £375,000 weekly contract due to the club's claimed £200,000 weekly wage cap.

Chelsea may also be looking for a new goalkeeper as there are reportedly concerns over Edouard Mendy's future and Kepa Arrizabalaga's performance.

"Every player has goals and wants to improve. Now I am focused on my team and in the summer, we will see what happens,"

Raya told AS.

"If they want to do business, they will have to do it but there is a long season left and I am only focused on doing it well. In the summer, we will assess my situation."
The latest contract offer from Chelsea is believed to have been rejected by Mendy, who is presently out with a fractured finger. His current contract with Chelsea expires in 2025.
