Football News: Kane, Son break Premier League goalscoring records in Palace win

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur both set new Premier League goal scoring records as the Lilywhites defeated Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday.

The Lilywhites lost 2-0 to Aston Villa before drawing with Brentford prior to the London derby, their only victories since the World Cup break. However, Antonio Conte's team racked up a rout over the Eagles to help them advance to the top-four, with Kane scoring twice before Matt Doherty and Son joined in.

Ivan Perisic's pass found Kane at the back post with 48 minutes gone, and he quickly added another goal after being set up by the vivacious Bryan Gil. In doing so, Kane surpassed Alan Shearer, the competition's all-time best scorer with 198 goals from just 300 appearances in the Premier League.

The England captain had to brag about more Premier League records than just Shearer's 196 goals in his first 300 games, two fewer than Kane. After Kane scored twice, Doherty found the bottom corner of the net, and in the 72nd minute of the game,

Son capitalised on a mistake by Marc Guehi to score a fourth goal. The South Korean has scored goals with Kane in 34 Premier League games, a new competition record, and has developed a productive combination with the England captain over the past couple of years.

As Son scored for just the fourth time in a challenging Premier League season, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who previously held the record for the pair to score together in the most Premier League games.

After the game, the 30-year-old acknowledged that he felt "great" but also "sad" for his teammates because this season hasn't been as successful as his previous ones.

"This is a difficult place to come and play well, second-half we turned around and scored four goals. This place is really difficult but I think the lads completely deserved it second-half we dominated the game and I think scored four beautiful goals,"

Son told Sky Sports News.

"It felt amazing, it was about time. I felt really sorry for the team, they expect me to do more than I have been doing so today I hope it could be the turning point to get confident and back on the scoresheet."

"I hope to help the team. We're working really hard to be consistent and always in the game, a goal is always important to get confidence back. I think it's really, really important for me, it could be turning around hope I can score many goals as I can."

Tottenham is still in fifth position in the Premier League standings, but they are now only two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who still have a game in hand.

Now that the FA Cup is in focus, Conte's team will host League One team Portsmouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday for a third-round match.
