Racing Louisville FC and Denmark forward Nadia Nadim said it was "heartbreaking to watch" what has happened in her home country of Afghanistan, following the return to power of the Taliban. After 20 years of war, the Taliban swept to victory in Afghanistan, as they completed their rapid advance across the country by capturing the capital city, Kabul, on 15th August. It came after foreign forces withdrew from Afghanistan following a deal between the United States and the Taliban - 20 years after US forces removed the militants from power. Taliban forces have pledged not to allow Afghanistan to become a base for terrorists who could threaten the West. Nadim expressed her fears over how young women in the country will be denied opportunities to emulate her success story, but said people must "keep their hopes up."
