Home favourite Mathieu van der Poel claimed a dramatic victory at his maiden Amstel Gold Race in Limburg in the Netherlands on Sunday, emulating his father Adri's win in the race back 29 years ago. The 24-year-old Corendon-Circus rider somehow managed to outsprint Jakob Fuglsang (Astana Pro Team), who had led for the majority of the race, and Simon Clarke (EF Education First) in a thrilling final 400 metres. There was another close finish in the women's race. Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) held off home favourites Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton–Scott) in second and Marianne Vos (CCC Liv) in third. Britain's Lizzie Deignan pushed the leaders in her return to the sport, just seven months after having her first child. The Trek–Segafredo rider broke out in front with 40 kilometres to go, but was unable to keep pace.
