Cricket News: World Cup winner Kapil Dev gives advice to star batter Shubman Gill

If the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 accomplished anything, it was to establish 23-year-old Shubman Gill as one of the top young batters in the world.

Going into the season, all eyes were on Gill, who had been in brilliant form for India and was unquestionably one of the finest players for Gujarat Titans in the tournament.

Throughout the competition, the 23-year-old was in a league of his own, even winning the IPL orange cap.

He had three century and 890 runs in 17 matches during the competition. Gill, who is only 23 years old, also became the IPL's second-highest individual run-getter in a season.

Former India captain Kapil Dev praised Gill's stunning efforts in the competition after witnessing his remarkable form. He believes Gill is following in the footsteps of many great players, but he needs another year to establish himself as a truly outstanding talent.

"Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli came, and now, with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability, but he needs more maturity,"

Kapil Dev told ABP News.

"If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he, too, could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It's too early (to say),"

he added.

Gujarat Titans reached their second IPL final in two years because of Gill's outstanding efforts; however, they were unable to go all the way as Chennai Super Kings delivered them a heart-breaking defeat and won their fifth IPL title after defeating them in the final by five wickets.
