On April 20, many celebrities around the world lost the 'blue tick' on their Twitter accounts. The verified blue tick was originally meant to protect well-known individuals against impersonation as a symbol of legitimacy.
However, Twitter has been deleting verified tick marks from accounts since Elon Musk took over the firm in 2022. Notably, under Musk's leadership, Twitter launched its paid membership 'Twitter Blue,'
This requires users to pay a monthly subscription fee for the verified checkmark. Prior to Musk's purchase of Twitter, blue checkmarks were awarded to notable entities around the globe.
This includes individuals, journalists, CEOs, politicians, and organisations after their identities were verified as a sign of authenticity. MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, among others, no longer have verified Twitter accounts.
They all have a huge number of followers on the microblogging site, similar to other social media platforms. Sachin Tendulkar, the great Indian Batsman, too lost his verification ticks as a result of the new Twitter rules.
Interestingly, this did not only happen to Indian cricketers but many great sports persons lost their blue tick. One of the greatest players in football history, Cristiano Ronaldo, also lost his verification mark on the platform.
Meanwhile, basketball superstar LeBron James' verification checkmark stayed intact, indicating that he may have previously subscribed to Twitter Blue.
Musk stated in November 2022 that Twitter would charge $8 per month for the verification badge in order to earn revenue from sources other than advertising.
Following that, the company added two new checkmark colours: gold for business organisations and grey for government, multilateral organisations, and officials.
Furthermore, it has started to display labels like "state-affiliated" and "automated by" to identify whether or not an account is tied with a government.
Individual users can maintain the blue tick marks for $8 per month. In the meanwhile, an organisation must spend $1,000 per month to authenticate its account, while an affiliate or employee account must pay $50 per month.
