Cricket News : Rohit Sharma gets injured in WI Clash, BCCI monitoring his situation

With a 7-wicket victory in the third Twenty20 International at Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts, on Tuesday, India claimed a 2-1 series lead over the West Indies thanks to Surya kumar Yadav's entertaining 76. (August 3). India's ability to restrict West Indies to 164 runs when they decided to bowl was largely down to the efforts of Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin. Nevertheless, it was a difficult total on a surface that was a little slow.

Early in the innings, India's skipper Rohit Sharma had to leave the field injured after suffering a back spasm, but Surya kumar made sure his absence was not felt by smashing 8 fours and 4 sixes in his 44 balls of play to help India win by seven wickets with an over to spare.

In the third T20I match against the West Indies in Basseterre, India's skipper Rohit Sharma had to leave the game injured. This happened as Rohit got retired hurt at 11 after experiencing a back spasm while chasing 165.

The BCCI reported that their medical staff is "watching his progress." if he could be fit for the next game is doubtful. After moving closer to quick bowler Alzarri Joseph in the second over and dragging a four to the fine-leg boundary via a bottom edge, Rohit felt some discomfort.

He left the field holding his back after speaking briefly with the physio Kamlesh Jain on the pitch. For the fourth T20I, which will be contested in Lauderhill on Saturday, Rohit hoped to be prepared. On Sunday, the same location will host the fifth and final T20I.

After India secured a 2-1 series lead, the Men in Blues skipper said:

"It [my body] is okay at the moment. We've got a few days in between [now and] the next game, so hopefully [I] should be okay."

The absence of all-rounder Harshal Patel, who missed the second and third T20Is at Basseterre due to a rib ailment, further diminished India's strength. In addition, the visitors benched Ravindra Jadeja on Tuesday as he was still recovering from a knee injury and gave Deepak Hooda a start.

Thus, the Indian team needs to be careful with their injury situations as the Asia Cup and more importantly the World Cup is just few days away.

For the ODI portion of the West Indies tour, Rohit had also been rested. Prior to it, he had been unable to play in the fifth Test against England that had been postponed and was played at Edgbaston in July due to a positive Covid-19 test from the four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire.
