Cricket News : Exceptionally proud- Pat Cummins after winning his debut Test as captain

A new era of Australian cricket with fast bowler Pat Cummins leading the team started with a familiar result for an Ashes test at the Gabba.

Australia won the series opener by nine wickets on Saturday with one and a half days to spare.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon's 400th wicket triggered a collapse that netted eight wickets for 77 runs as the visiting team finished the match in a similar vein to how they started.

Spin legend Shane Warne (708) and fast bowler Glen McGrath (563) are the only two Australian bowlers to surpass 400 wickets in Tests.

Pat Cummins marked his debut as captaincy with a handsome win, particularly since it came in the Ashes opener.

Cummins said he was “exceptionally proud,” of the start, noting the big contributions from Lyon, Carey and Travis Head, who cemented his place in the batting lineup with 152 in Australia's first innings total of 425.

The five-match series moves to Adelaide, where a day-night test starts Thursday.
