Cricket News: BCCI plans to compensate venues not hosting 2023 WC matches

For the first time, the ICC 50-over ODI World Cup will be staged entirely in India. During the World Cup, matches will be held at ten different locations across the country.

The venues are:

Delhi, Dharamsala, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Lucknow.

On October 5, the reigning champions England will face New Zealand at the in Ahmedabad to kick-off the tournament. On November 19, the 10-team tournament's final match will also take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

India is a cricket-crazy country with the most official cricket stadiums in the world. As a result, a handful of locations will not host World Cup matches. To compensate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) intends to provide such venues with out-of-turn opportunities to host ODI matches during India's home season.

According to sources, BCCI secretary Jay Shah proposed that the venues hosting World Cup games give up their rights to stage ODI matches during India's home season.

Shah notified state units in a letter that his idea had been unanimously endorsed by authorities from the 10 World Cup venues.

"During our meeting, I had proposed a solution to ensure a fair distribution of matches for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. I requested the hosting associations, with the exception of Assam and Kerala, who were allocated warm-up matches, to voluntary forego their turn to host an ODI during the bilateral international season. This proposal was put forth in order to accommodate the state associations that unfortunately missed out on hosting matches of the Cricket World Cup."

"I am pleased to inform you that the proposal received unanimous agreement and support from all the participating associations,"

Shah said in the letter as per NDTV Sports.

Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram will host World Cup warm-up games and will maintain the rights to host matches throughout India's home season.

The first match of India's ODI World Cup in 2023 will be a challenging one. On October 8, they will face the five-time champions Australia in Chennai.

The last time India and Australia met in the ODI World Cup was in the 2019 edition of the big tournament. Virat Kohli's men won by 36 runs after setting a target of 353.
