Golf: Collin Morikawa wins Workday Charity Open after extraordinary final day

Collin Morikawa won the Workday Charity Open in extraordinary circumstances in Dublin, Ohio on Sunday, finally overcoming overnight leader Justin Thomas on the third play-off hole. Thomas recovered from a bad start to hole an eagle putt on the 15th to go to 21-under for the tournament and open up a three shot lead over Morikawa with three holes to play. It seemed Thomas would stroll to a 13th career title and move to the top of the FedEx Cup standings, but Morikawa hung on and after Thomas missed a makeable putt to win the tournament on the 18th green, the American pair went into extra holes tied at -19 overall. Thomas then drained a monster 50-foot putt on the first play-off hole, but Morikawa responded with a 25-foot effort of his own to stay in the hunt. Thomas had another putt to win on the 2nd extra hole, but the ball slid by the cup. On the third, Thomas put his tee shot behind a tree as Morikawa made the green in regulation and after Thomas missed par, Morikawa had two putts to win his second title on the PGA Tour, which he completed with ease. Morikawa, who lost a play-off at Colonial last month by missing a 3-foot putt, put that disappointment firmly behind him. Norway's Viktor Hovland finished alone in third place on 15-under for the tournament, to shots clear of Gary Woodland of the United States and Britain's Ian Poulter.
