Football News: Sergio Ramos required to take pay cut to stay at PSG?

If Sergio Ramos wants to extend his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, he will reportedly have to accept a pay cut. The 36-year-old defender's contract at Parc des Princes is set to expire at the conclusion of the current campaign.

Ramos ended his trophy-filled 16-year Real Madrid career when he joined PSG in the summer of 2021, but the Spaniard struggled with injuries in his first season and appeared in just 13 games overall.

Ramos has subsequently established himself as a first-team regular for the Parisian giants under manager Christophe Galtier. So far, the former Spanish captain has started in 32 of his 36 appearances in all competitions this season.

Only Gianluigi Donnarumma and Vitinha have made more appearances than Ramos for the club this season. According to a source from last month, PSG have not yet decided whether to offer Ramos. The former Spain international reportedly makes about £225,000 per week.

According to a different report, the reigning Ligue 1 champions have chosen to postpone contract negotiations with both Ramos and star forward Lionel Messi, who is also up for renewal this summer, due to worries about breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

Ramos would reportedly have to accept a wage reduction if he wants to stay at the Parc des Princes for the upcoming campaign, according to Sport, as PSG is reportedly unwilling to extend his contract on his existing terms.

Ramos has been free to sign pre-contract deals with overseas clubs since January, according to the source, and both teams in Saudi Arabia and the MLS are eager to woo him away from Paris.

Ramos said that discussions on his future will probably happen at the end of the current campaign after PSG fell 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match last month.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Ramos said:

"I live day by day. Last season was very hard- now I feel good both physically and mentally, that is the most important. I don't think about the future. We will see this summer."

The French team already has a defensive successor lined up as they have agreed to sign Milan Skriniar when his contract with Inter Milan ends at the end of the season, should Ramos fail to reach new terms with PSG and leave the club for free in June.

PSG has also reportedly expressed interest in Villarreal center-back Pau Torres, who Luis Campos is said to have high regard for.

Since making his senior debut in 2017, Torres has made 161 appearances for the Yellow Submarine. Last summer, the 26-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, but the big-money switch to Old Trafford never materialised.

Ramos and Messi's long-term fates are thought to be questionable, while Brazilian star Neymar is apparently set to retire at PSG despite persistent rumours of a potential transfer.
