Football News: 26-year-old set to sign a new contract with Chelsea

Ben Chilwell is said to have agreed to sign a contract extension with Chelsea, putting an end to doubts about his future. Since joining the Blues for £50 million from Leicester City in August 2020, the left-back has proven to be a crucial player.

Chilwell has made 80 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists. However, the Englishman has been missing significant time on the bench due to injuries.

It might be argued that this has only emphasized Chilwell's significance at Stamford Bridge looking at Chelsea's poor run.

Since Chelsea started a new era with new owners at the end of May, there has been a focus on keeping as many players as possible out of the final two years of their contracts.

With Chilwell's contract set to expire in 2025, speculation about the next part of his career has begun. Man City are reportedly interested in signing Chilwell at a time when Pep Guardiola may seek a new option at left back.

Chelsea will also soon be forced to make significant concessions in order to meet FFP standards. Thus, the Blues could use the former Leicester man as a logical alternative for collecting revenue.

Nonetheless, Chilwell is willing to devote his future to the West Londoners by signing new terms, according to The Athletic.

According to the source, Chilwell will sign a contract extension until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season, a two-year extension that is not necessarily in line with the club's chosen approach.

Since last year, it has been clear that the Chelsea management wants as many players as possible to be on six-year contracts, spreading the financial outlay over a longer period of time to help FFP problems.

However, retaining Chilwell's services, if confirmed, will be considered as a significant coup ahead of a period of uncertainty.

Unless Chelsea win the Champions League this season, interim manager Frank Lampard will need to guide the club to at least seventh place in the Premier League table to gain European participation, with the current gap standing at seven points.
