Football: Criminal proceedings filed against Infantino described as grotesque and unfair - Bell

FIFA's deputy secretary general, Alasdair Bell, told on Monday he is "one hundred per cent confident" that Gianni Infantino will avoid criminal charge or conviction, describing the Swiss criminal proceedings filed against the FIFA president last Thursday as "grotesque and unfair", and like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Speaking after a virtual media conference where FIFA's legal team launched a robust defence of their president, Bell lamented the "irreversible" PR damage done by the claim and joked that the only way Infantino would fall foul of the Swiss law is if a new crime was created of: "meeting the attorney general and not remembering everything that was discussed." Embattled Swiss Attorney General, Michael Lauber, offered to resign two weeks ago over claims he lied about a secret meeting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in June 2017, where neither party took notes or can recollect what was discussed. Lauber and Infantino met twice in 2016, soon after the FIFA president was elected, and again in 2017 while the attorney general controlled a sprawling investigation into corruption linked to the governing body of soccer and officials worldwide.
