Dominic Thiem won his first major title by outlasting Alexander Zverev in the first US Open final to be decided in a fifth-set tiebreaker on Sunday. The Austrian became the first player since 1949 to come back from two sets down in New York - the last player who was able to do the same was Pancho Gonzales against Ted Schroeder with a 16–18, 2–6, 6–1, 6–2, 6–4 victory. Thiem won 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
