Fifth seed Dominic Thiem advanced to the Madrid Open third round as American qualifier Reilly Opelka withdrew through injury in the third set. The Austrian won the match 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 1-0 and will next face either tenth seed Fabio Fognini or John Millman.
